FAQs
The residency is ideal for therapists seeking to advance their clinical thought process and confidence in treating orthopedic patients. The ideal candidate is intrinsically motivated to continue learning post-graduation and stay up-to-date with best practices. They also desire networking opportunities with like-minded therapists across the company and region.
OrthoVirginia offers a unique environment as a physician-owned practice, with physicians willing to allow residents to shadow them in clinics and operating rooms. Our excellent faculty, with diverse training and specialties, helps residents maximize their learning potential.
At the end of the residency, residents will sit for the Board Certification exam in Orthopedics. To be eligible for this exam, candidates must either complete an orthopedic residency or accumulate 2,000 hours of patient care in the practice setting. New for this year, applicants need 2,000 direct patient care hours or evidence of observational or mentored patient care hours, subdivided into body region groupings.
While preparation for this exam is challenging, it does not include a clinical application of skills to demonstrate efficiency in thought processes, nor does it have a manual component to demonstrate proficiency of skill. The residency program prepares residents not only to pass this exam but also to demonstrate excellence in their evaluation and treatment of orthopedic cases.
All cohorts will start in August and run for 15 months through November of the following year.
The program will work to find mentors in your region if a mentor cannot be found at your specific site. We conduct virtual meetings on Teams during the week, and our quarterly skills labs alternate between Richmond and Northern Virginia.
The residency is at no cost to the resident. The resident will sign a contract to repay OrthoVirginia for failure to complete the program/pass the OCS exam or if they leave the company prior to the contract date.
Residents will have a 30/10 split for clinical and non-clinical (didactic) hours. The residents’ non-clinical hours will be consist of but not limited to, lecture, lab, experiential learning with other providers in the company, mentoring sessions with mentor and weekly calls with the program director.
Residents will maintain their full salary during their residency period despite the reduction in clinical hours.
