Commonwealth Orthopaedics and OrthoVirginia Announce Merger

Fairfax, Va. (October 16, 2014) -- Commonwealth Orthopaedics, based in Northern Virginia, and OrthoVirginia, based in Richmond, have announced that their practices will merge effective January 1, 2015. At that time, Commonwealth Orthopaedics will change its name to OrthoVirginia.

Commonwealth Orthopaedics is the largest orthopaedic specialty group practice in Northern Virginia with 37 physicians and OrthoVirginia is a 45-physician orthopaedic specialty group practice with offices in Richmond and throughout Central Virginia.

The new practice will become the largest orthopaedic specialty group practice in Virginia, with 82 physicians, 21 office locations, an MRI facility, and multiple physical and occupational therapy clinics and outpatient surgery centers.

"This is good news for everyone involved – especially our patients," said Dr. David Miller, president of OrthoVirginia. "It will improve the delivery of orthopaedic care in Virginia, provide a stronger network of high-quality orthopaedic physicians, and position both organizations for future success in a rapidly changing healthcare environment."

"Our organizations will share knowledge and best practices to improve quality, safety and outcomes," said Dr. Mark Madden, chairman of Commonwealth Orthopaedics. "We'll also share information on evolving healthcare trends such as Meaningful Use, bundled payments, ICD-10 and the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) to improve value for our patients. Except for the name change for Commonwealth Orthopaedics, the merger will be seamless to patients," said Madden. "Day-to-day operations at both organizations will not change. Our physicians, physician assistants, physical therapists and clinical staff will continue to provide excellent care for our patients in their respective offices and clinics."

Commonwealth Orthopaedics, established in 1994, is an orthopaedic surgery group practice with 10 office locations across Northern Virginia, including seven physical therapy facilities and an outpatient surgery center.

OrthoVirginia, established in 1960, is an orthopaedic surgery group with 11 locations serving the greater Richmond, Prince George County, Kilmarnock and Farmville areas, including seven physical therapy locations and two outpatient surgery centers.
