Mallet finger is a tear in the tendon at the tip of the finger is damaged. It can usually be treated by wearing a splint for several weeks.

Most of the time mallet finger can be treated without surgery. When the tendons near the tip of a finger tear, the fingertip will droop down and not be able to be made straight. It can be very tender.

Your doctor will give you a splint to wear for several weeks to keep the finger straight as the tendon heals.

If there is also a fracture or bone fragments, surgery may be performed.
