Hip resurfacing

Hip resurfacing is a type of hip replacement for hip arthritis, instead of a total hip replacement. In a hip resurfacing, a cover is placed over the ball part of the thigh bone, instead of replacing the entire top of the thigh bone.

Like in a traditional total hip replacement, the part of the joint that is in the pelvis has the damaged part removed and replaced with a smooth metal cup.

Unlike in a traditional total hip replacement, the part of the joint that is the thigh bone just is smoothed out and the cover put on it, instead of having a section of bone replaced.

Hip resurfacing isn’t only suitable for some people who need hip replacements. Your surgeon can tell you if it is right for you.

After the surgery, you may need a walker or crutches, and will need to follow your surgeon’s instructions. You will have exercises to do at home and will go to physical therapy.
