John Phipps, MD
Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Phipps is an experienced physician executive and healthcare leader. He has held various positions, including president of the Novant Health Medical Group. Most recently, he served as the system leader for care transformation at Inova Health System. He has over 20 years’ experience in clinical practice as an endocrinologist.
Dr. Phipps received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He stayed there for his internal medicine residency and completed his endocrinology fellowship at the University of Virginia.
General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer
Sara has a background in both health and law, serving as a practice administrator for Charlottesville Hand Surgery before receiving her law degree. She was an associate at healthcare-focused law firms, and the associate general counsel for the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association before she joined OrthoVirginia.
Sara received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Virginia and a master of health administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. She earned her law degree at the University of Richmond.
Christopher Higgins, CPA
Chief Financial Officer
Early in his career Chris was a senior accountant at Deloitte & Touche and a finance manager at Thomas Jefferson University. He became the chief financial officer and vice president of operations of Founders Healthcare before being the chief operating officer for the Department of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining OrthoVirginia in 2019, Chris was the executive director of finance and business transformation at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System.
Chris has a bachelor of science in business from La Salle University and is a Certified Public Accountant.
HC Eschenroeder, Jr., MD
Chief Medical Information Officer
Dr. Eschenroeder, an orthopedic surgeon at OrthoVirginia, also serves as the chief medical information officer to ensure that OrthoVirginia’s use of technology and of electronic medical records serves the needs of our patients, physicians ,and staff.
Dr. Eschenroeder earned his bachelor of arts in biology from the University of Virginia and his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He did his internship in general surgery and residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Virginia and his fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at Johns Hopkins.
Terri Ripley, MIT, CPHIMS, FHIMSS
Chief Information Officer
Terri started at Centra, a health system in the Lynchburg area, as a programmer and analyst. Later roles included team leader revenue cycle, team leader web development, and manager of applications services. Her final role at Centra was as the director for systems and programming. After a couple of years as a consultant she went to Inova Health System as the assistant vice president for project portfolio management. She joined OrthoVirginia in 2017.
Terri has a bachelor of science in computer science from Lynchburg College and a masters of information technology from Virginia Tech.
Tomako R. Deaner
Chief Human Resources Officer
Before joining OrthoVirginia in 2017, Tommie spent her career at Dominion Energy. She went from a senior human resources generalist to a human resources manager. She also was a diversity and staffing manager and payroll manager during her time there. Tommie’s final role at Dominion was as the manager for human resources information system strategy and analytics.
Tommie has a bachelor of arts in English literature from the University of California-Davis.
Chief Administrative Officer (Central Region)
Lynne started her career with several roles at Signet Bank before becoming the chief financial officer for a temporary worker agency. She was the chief executive officer for Compass Enterprises for a dozen years, and the chief operating officer and later chief relationship officer at PartnerMD, a concierge medical service, before coming to OrthoVirginia.
Lynne earned a bachelor of business administration in accounting from Radford University.
Chief Administrative Officer (North Region)
Justin started his career as a naval flight officer in the U.S. Navy. After leaving the service, he worked in medical device sales before becoming an administrative director at Elliot Health System in New Hampshire. He was later a practice group administrator at George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates before starting his current position.
Justin earned his bachelor of science in environmental technology from Cornell University and a master of science in healthcare delivery science from Dartmouth College.
Chief Administrative Officer (West & East Regions)
Barbie has been with OrthoVirginia for most of her career, starting as the Operations Director for Central Virginia Orthopaedics in the 1990s. When local orthopedic practices merged in 2005 she became the Director of Operations at the Orthopaedic Center of Central Virginia (OCCV). When OCCV merged with OrthoVirginia in 2016, Barbie started her current position.
She earned a bachelor of arts in psychology from the University of Virginia and a masters of business administration from Averett University.
