Dr. Gordon Avery is a general orthopedist with special interests in sports medicine and joint replacement. He previously services as the President of the Arlington County Medical Society and was team physician for the Washington Redskins. He is active in a number of medical societies and professional leadership roles and is a member of the teaching faculty at Georgetown University Medical School. He is the Chairman of the Orthopedics Department at Virginia Hospital Center and Northern Virginia Doctor’s Hospital. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, fishing, sailing, scuba diving, and spending time with his family.

Bio

Dr. Gordon Avery earned his undergraduate degree from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, before going on to receive his medical degree from The University of New York at Buffalo, College of Medicine. He then moved to Washington, DC, and completed his internship and orthopedic residency at Georgetown University Medical Center where he concluded his formal medical training as Chief Resident.

Dr. Avery has been practicing orthopedic surgery in Northern Virginia for more than twenty-five years. As a general orthopedist, he has special interests in sports medicine and joint replacement.

Dr Avery is active in a number of medical societies and professional leadership roles. He is presently serving as Chairman of the Orthopedic Department at the Virginia Hospital Center, and he is the former Chief of Orthopedics at Northern Virginia Doctor’s Hospital. He is past President of the Arlington County Medical Society and has served as the Vice Counselor and Delegate from the 10th District to the Medical Society of Virginia. Dr. Avery participates in academia as well, serving as a member of the teaching faculty at Georgetown University Medical School where he participates in student and resident education. Additionally, he is involved in sports medicine having served as team orthopedic surgeon for the Washington Redskins from 1995-2000 and as a team physician for Northern Virginia High Schools for over twenty years.

Dr. Avery and his wife, Suzanne, reside in McLean, Virginia, and they have three children—two sons and a daughter. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, fishing, sailing and scuba diving.
