Dr. McMahon has enjoyed practicing orthopedics for 30 years. After graduating with a BA from the University of Oregon, Dr. McMahon went on to earn his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. He began his medical training with 3 years of general surgery residency at the University of Oregon, then one year of orthopedic research at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center. He then completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Southern California. Before moving to Northern Virginia, he spent three years in private practice in the Los Angeles area. There, he served as an instructor of adult reconstructive surgery at the University of Southern California and contributed to a textbook chapter on the topic of surgical treatment of the arthritic knee.
Dr. McMahon is pleased to be one of OrthoVirginia’ only surgeons to offer patients an innovative approach to total hip replacement. He specializes in the less invasive direct anterior approach to hip arthroplasty- the only technique that does not disrupt natural muscular anatomy. This approach allows rapid return to activity, shorter rehabilitation time and a smaller incision than other techniques used for total hip replacement. While his practice specializes in total joint reconstruction, Dr. McMahon also has a wealth of experience in treating sports-related and general orthopedic injuries.
Active in hospital leadership, Dr. McMahon has served as Chief of Orthopaedics at Inova Fair Oaks and Inova Alexandria Hospitals. He has also served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Medical Executive Committee at Inova Alexandria Hospital. He previously worked as team physician for Lake Braddock High School.
Dr. McMahon is married to Dr. Nancy McMahon, and they have two grown children and two granddaughters. Dr. McMahon enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, and maintaining an active lifestyle.
