Dr. Michael Wind is an orthopedic surgeon and member of OrthoVirginia in Richmond, Virginia. He is a hip and knee surgery specialist, focusing on arthroscopic surgery of the hip and total joint replacement surgery.

Dual Fellowship Subspecialty Training

Dr. Wind has achieved dual fellowship subspecialty training in sports medicine/arthroscopic surgery and total joint replacement. During fellowship training, Dr. Wind was fortunate to work with experts from all over the world in both sports medicine and joint replacement surgery. This allowed for exposure to the latest and most technologically advanced methods in each of these subspecialty areas of orthopedics.

Specializing Exclusively in Hip and Knee Surgery

In contradistinction to general orthopedic practices, Dr. Wind has chosen to focus his practice  exclusively on surgery of the hip and knee. This specialization allows Dr. Wind to offer his patients a full spectrum of treatment options for any hip or knee disorder, including total hip or knee replacement.

The philosophy behind this type of subspecialty practice is that no matter what the hip or knee problem, patients can be confident that all options will be presented and available in an elite setting.

The first option for patients will always be joint preserving treatments if possible. Joint preservation is based on the tenets of sports medicine. The goal is to restore the joint to full function with conservative measures, minimally invasive procedures, and retention of native tissues.

When restoration of the native joint is no longer possible, joint replacement surgery (also known as total joint arthroplasty) is the next alternative.

Typical Procedures Offered for the Hip and Knee

Common procedures performed by Dr. Wind for the hip include hip arthroscopy, treatment of labral pathology, treatment of femoroacetabular impingement, Birmingham hip resurfacing, and both primary and revision total hip replacement.

Common procedures for the knee include partial knee replacement, patellofemoral joint replacement, primary total knee replacement, and revision total knee replacement.

Dr Wind is also one of the only surgeons in Virginia to offer patients robotic assisted joint replacement surgery utilizing state of the art technology.

Personal Note

First, thank you for visiting my website. I hope that you find it helpful in learning more about my areas of expertise and treatment options that I can offer patients. The purpose of this site is not to offer a full explanation of all disorders of the hip and knee. That would be quite an undertaking! Rather, what I hope you will find is more information about me personally and details about the services that I can provide to you as a patient.

Orthopedic disorders can be a scary experience for patients. Joint pain results in a real decrease in quality of life. Not being able to walk, run, participate in athletics or play with your children can cause a significant amount of stress and concern. The decision to seek help and even consider the possibility of surgical intervention can be quite daunting. You are, quite literally, putting your health in the hands of a physician. You SHOULD want to know more about your surgeon. It is important to know about his/her areas of specialty and his/her educational background, residency training, fellowship training and services offered.

I would encourage you to ask questions on these topics. When I or a loved one has been a patient these are all questions that I have wanted to know. My goal here is to answer as many questions as possible so you, as a patient, can be more comfortable making informed decisions.

On a personal level, it is such a privilege to be here working in Richmond. I feel quite blessed to have the opportunity to serve the people that I grew up with and the area that I consider home. Both Kristen and I have lived many places in the world, but none better than here in Richmond.

Biography

Growing Up in Virginia

Dr. Wind is a native of Tappahannock, Virginia. He attended Essex High School where he was an all-state athlete in multiple sports.

He received his undergraduate education at Duke University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. During his time at Duke, he was an intercollegiate athlete and, to this day, has continued to have a passion for sports and athletics.

He obtained his medical degree from the University of Virginia and went on to complete his orthopedic residency training at the University of Cincinnati.

Upon completion, Dr. Wind participated in fellowship training programs in two specialty areas of orthopedic surgery. These fellowship experiences offered firsthand training in both arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee.

Obtaining Uniquely Dual Subspecialty Training

Dr. Wind is one of the few orthoaedic surgeons in Virginia to have dual fellowship subspecialty training.

His first fellowship program was with the Southern Joint Replacement Institute in Nashville, TN focusing on total joint replacement. While in Nashville, Dr. Wind gained extensive specialty training in both primary and complex revision hip and knee replacement surgery.

Following this, Dr. Wind traveled to Perth, Australia, where he completed additional fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at the Perth Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Centre. In Australia, he gained extensive experience in the treatment of athletic conditions. He was excited to also gain an international perspective on sports medicine including some excellent techniques that are underutilized in the United States.

Finally, while in Perth, Dr. Wind met his future wife, Kristen. They return to Australia often to visit family and also to continue to interact with the Perth orthopedic community.

Bringing Both Subspecialties Back to Richmond, VA

Dr. Wind is excited to bring fellowship specialty training in two distinct areas of orthopedic surgery to the Richmond area. He looks forward to assisting patients with all hip and knee disorders and is proud to offer the latest surgical techniques for both joint preserving and joint replacement surgery.

In his time outside of medicine, Dr. Wind enjoys jogging, cycling, skiing and coaching youth sports. He has had the fortune of living in several different countries during his medical training and appreciates the perspectives on medicine and life that these experiences have provided.

He and Kristen reside in historic Church Hill and are the proud parents of four boys.

In his practice, Dr. Wind has taken this fellowship experience and focused directly on conditions affecting the hip and knee.

Hip and Knee Disorders and Treatments

Hip and knee disorders encompass a broad range of pathology. Athletes can develop overuse syndromes that cause pain throughout the lower extremity. Patients can develop tears of the hip labrum or knee meniscus that result in significant pain and dysfunction. Osteoarthritis or post-traumatic arthritis can cause severe restrictions to mobility and lifestyle. In each of these cases the underlying cause of pain and dysfunction is different however the end result is a significant decrease in quality of life. For many problems the best solution is nonoperative treatment with physical therapy, bracing, or medications. Other problems may be addressed with minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery solutions. Severe joint dysfunction and deformity may require joint replacement. Dr. Wind, with training in both arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement, can offer patients all possible options and then assist them in making the best treatment choice possible.

Common Hip and Knee Disorders

Hip disorders commonly treated by Dr. Wind include labral tears, chondral (cartilage) damage, snapping hip syndrome, femoroacetabular impingement, avascular necrosis (AVN), osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, and failed previous hip replacements. Knee disorders commonly treated by Dr. Wind include meniscal tears, osteoarthritis, patellofemoral arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, and failed previous knee replacements.
