Dr. O’Connell is a native of Burlington, VT. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from the University of Vermont. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Northwestern University, and completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic. He then came to Virginia Beach to start his practice in 1989. His interest is in sports medicine, specializing in complex shoulder and knee reconstructions including complicated rotator cuff repair, superior capsular reconstructions, anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacement, primary and revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and anterior cruciate ligament repair. Dr. O’Connell is an Assistant Professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He is active in local sports, serving as the team physician for the Norfolk Admirals, Virginia Wesleyan University and Virginia Beach Public High Schools. Dr. O’Connell is board certified in orthopedic surgery.
