Post-Operative Instructions

Shoulder Replacement

Keep shoulder dressing dry and in place for 48 hours. May remove shoulder dressing in 2 days and get shoulder wet in shower. Do not submerge shoulder for 2 weeks – no bath, hot tub or pool for 2 weeks. Leave shoulder open to air with no dressing after 2 days. Keep shoulder in sling for 4 weeks. Remove arm from sling 2 times a day to work on range of motion of the elbow.

You will be given 3 medications:

  • Motrin 800mg: 1 pill every 6 hours as needed for pain
  • Percocet 5mg: 1-2 pills every 4 hours as needed for pain if the Motrin doesn’t cover all of your pain
  • Phenergan 12.5mg: 1 pill every 6 hours as needed for nausea

You can ice the shoulder for 30 minutes at a time, then nothing for 2 hours then ice again for 30 minutes at a time and so on. Stay ahead of the pain. Once you feel any pain, take the Motrin. If that doesn’t cover it, take the Percocet.

Start in Physical Therapy as soon as possible.
