B. Thomas Mazahery, MD
Thanks to my care at OrthoVirginia, I can get back to my life.
I had an L5/S1 herniated disc and saw a Neurosurgeon recommended to me, and shortly after a Microdiscectomy I developed an infection in the surgical site. After a 2 day stay in the hospital and an MRI, he came to see me to discuss the results. Called it a hematoma and said it should go away on its own. After 2 months and no real significant improvement, I looked for a 2nd opinion. I ended up at Dr. Mazahery. After hearing my story, he couldn't believe that it took 2 days for my surgeon to see me after being admitted to the hospital. At this point, I was in pain, walking on a walker, using a wheel chair to get into his office and having to miss out on work and other opportunities. The first thing Dr. Mazahery did was order an MRI to see what the current situation was. After the MRI, he called it a hot mess and didn't know what was going on but that it need to be corrected with another surgery, the question was, what kind. He took an xray to determine spine stability and the infection had compromised the disc. XRay determined the spine was unstable and I needed to have a fusion. Not what I wanted to hear, but it was the only way to get my life back. Everything Dr. Mazahery did gave me complete trust that he would do the right thing and be conservative as he possibly could. I scheduled the surgery with Dr. Mazahery. After the surgery, Dr. Mazahery had mentioned that during my recovery he would be on vacation, but he had another surgeon and his PA from the practice stop by daily to check on me and ensure I had no complications. After 7 days in the hospital, I was able to get back on my feet, little pain and get back to on the road to recovery. 1 year later, I am completely healed, bone grafts are complete. Fusion is healed. No infection and owe it all to Dr. Mazahery. I recommend him to anyone that I know or hear that has back issues and needs an honest and thorough answer with the intelligence and knowledge for the righ t course of treatment. I cannot thank the attention to detail, commitment to his profession and commitment to his patient care for being the doctor I needed. He is one of the good ones.
