William R. Mook, MD
Thanks to my care at OrthoVirginia, I can get back to my active, athletic life without pain and physical limitations.
I've been dealing with a degenerating shoulder for several years. I'm 54 years old and between baseball, football, softball, volleyball, racquetball and all of the thousands of workouts in the course of my life, some body part was going to eventually give out. I'm mainly right-handed, so no surprise it ended up being my right shoulder. The severe arthritis and some bicep tendon damage got to the point the every-day tasks were causing serious pain.
I choose to have the surgery two weeks before Thanksgiving in order to take advantage of the holiday work slow-down, and having that extra time to recover made a huge difference. Doctor Mook was exceptionally thorough in explaining each part of the procedure, what to expect during recovery, potential timeframes to return to certain activities, etc. Any and all information to make a well-educated decision was provided in detail.
I'm not going to sugar-coat this next part - the first two weeks of recovery were rough. A big help was Dr. Mook sends patients home with a nerve block attached to a small time-release pump you carry over your shoulder. This lasts anywhere between 48-72 hours and takes enough of the worst part of the pain away to get you to the next stage which is when the physical therapy starts in earnest. Just be prepared to constantly adjust and try to find the least uncomfortable position when trying to sleep.
Physical Therapy is arguably the single most important part of your recovery. The protocol Dr. Mook / OrthoVirginia provides is extremely detailed and quantified and should be followed to the letter. They have a list of recommended offices and I'm sure all are extremely qualified, but I give my full endorsement and support to Integrated Sports Medicine located in Landsdowne, VA. Over the last 5 months, I have worked with each one of the therapists at one time or another and every, single one is simply amazing! I will continue to give them full credit for the care, attention and treatment / techniques that have brought me to near 100% recovery in a shorter time than I expected or imagined possible.
Lastly and probably most importantly is your own mental fortitude and work ethic. OrthoVirginia and physical therapy are fantastic at what they do but they can only take you so far. If you are willing to spend time in-between appointments stretching, doing your exercises and staying true to recovery guidelines then you will have as good an experience as I have. Doctor Mook has reiterated several times a replacement will last and respond only as long as it's treated correctly. I've had to adjust some of my workouts and sports because I want this procedure to last as many decades as I do. I'm back golfing and doing all of my regular workouts (with not as much over-head lifting with heavy weights) as I was before the surgery and could not be more satisfied with the outcome.
