Patient Stories

Steven S. Hughes, MD

I have been seeing Dr. Hughes for a number of years -- one of the discs in my lumbar region area was slipping with age and pinching my nerves, which caused numbness, pins/needles feeling in my legs and feet. I did do steroids and physical therapy over a period of years (I'd say about 5), but it just kept getting worse. I finally reached a point that the pain was just too much to bear. I could not stand for more than a few minutes at a time, and walking more than half a block was painful. The desire to be pain free overtook my fear of surgery. I had the surgery done in February of this year and the transformation is mind-blowing! That is not an exaggeration. From the first walk around the hospital floor, I was amazed. No numbness, no pins/needles, no pain (other than the pain of surgery). I am now able to walk as long as I want (I can walk my dog again!) and stand as long as I want (I can go to museums now!). Cannot emphasize enough how pleased I am. I'm sorry I dragged my feet for so long to get this surgery done. And Dr. Hughes and his staff are very professional and caring people -- I never felt ignored or that they didn't care. Return calls were always prompt, and communication between myself, the doctor and his staff was excellent. I would give 5 stars out of 5 if that were possible here.
