Hip Arthroscopy: Minimally Invasive Alternative for Hip Problems

Hip Arthroscopy allows us to repair and restore the normal anatomy of the hip joint in a minimally invasive fashion, thereby allowing patients to return to everyday life, recreation and sports much more quickly. Commonwealth offers the latest minimally invasive techniques for hip arthroscopy to treat conditions such as labral tears, traumatic cartilage injuries, early osteoarthritis and femoroacetabular impingement, which occurs when the head of the femur does not have full range of motion within the socket. In fact, arthroscopic procedures to treat femoroacetabular impingement may remove a major risk factor in the development of osteoarthritis.

This video gives more information, including a patient's perspective, on hip arthroscopy.

As Director for OrthoVirginia's new Return to Sport Post-Rehabilitation program, assisting people return to their desired activities after hip arthroscopy is particularly near and dear to me. I myself received this procedure on one hip from Dr. Parker in 2008. I've always lived an active lifestyle in sports so the prospect for surgery was not encouraging but neither was the constant pain that I received to the point of muscle failure. My leg would literally give out on me - this was not good.

I had an extensive version of the surgery performed in November and I got myself back to playing sports and working out in 3 months. However, I have to admit, that my physical performance was not the same for quite a bit longer than that. It required specific attention and dedication on my part to rehabilitate my entire body to get accustomed to the new movements my hip would provide.

In the process of recovering from hip arthroscopy, I was able to utilize techniques that have gotten rid of my knee pain, shin splints, and other overuse injuries with which I had been struggling. Proper post-rehab really saved my active life.
