What is a Certified Hand Therapist?

A Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) is an occupational or physical therapist who specializes in the treatment of hands. They must have a minimum of five (5) years post graduate experience with at least 4000 hours in hand therapy experience and have successfully passed a comprehensive exam of advanced clinical skills and theory in upper quarter rehabilitation including elbow and shoulder.

OrthoVirginia’s highly skilled and dedicated hand therapists are proficient in their treatment of hand and upper extremity issues from acute to chronic. They are able to evaluate and design treatments based on physician’s protocols, patient’s diagnosis and specific needs.

The scope of hand therapy services include but are not limited to wound and scar management, edema (swelling) control, pain control, range of motion exercises, strengthening, dexterity training and static and dynamic custom splint fabrication,  ADL skills through adapted methods and equipment, and Instruction in desensitization and sensory re-education following nerve injury or trauma.
