West End Orthopaedic Clinic Becomes OrthoVirginia

June 27th, 2011

Name Change Coincides with the Opening of a New, State-of-the-Art Building Dedicated to Orthopedic Specialty Care

West End Orthopaedic Clinic has announced that they are changing the name of their practice to OrthoVirginia. Coinciding with the name change will be the opening of a new state-of-the-art facility, completely dedicated to orthopedic specialty care and sports medicine, at the Boulders near Chippenham Hospital, where its Chippenham Clinic and administrative office will move.

The new name more accurately reflects the many locations the practice serves, not only in its home base of Richmond, but also in all locations throughout central Virginia, as well as the total range of high-quality specialty orthopedic care and services available through the practice. The new facility reinforces the practice’s commitment to total quality care for each patient.

“While our name is changing, what stays the same are the hallmarks of our practice that we are known for – including an unparalleled group of physician specialists and supporting experts who make up one of the most focused and cohesive medical specialty teams in the region,” said Anthony J. Shaia, M.D., president of OrthoVirginia. “We also are committed to staying at the forefront of new technologies and to finding innovative ways to serve our patients best in the face of an ever-changing healthcare field, as well as to maintaining professional credentials and certification through the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. We feel that our new name and our new Chippenham facility reinforce those commitments.”

“It is important to note that our name change is simply that – a name change. The practice remains independent, strong and healthy. We continue to strive for excellence and find ways to provide relevant, high-quality orthopedic care for individuals with orthopedic issues throughout the state – that is something we are very proud of,” continued Dr. Shaia.

The new OrthoVirginia office will be located at the Boulders near Chippenham Hospital. This location will provide patients with a brand-new, easily accessible and centrally located state-of-the-art facility that brings orthopedic patient care all under one roof. Services will include diagnosis and treatment of a range of orthopedic issues, physical therapy, occupational therapy and imaging. An outpatient surgical facility will open at this location in 2012.

OrthoVirginia physician specialists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, technicians and staff moved into the building in mid-June, and patients will be scheduled at the new facility the week of June 27. OrthoVirginia’s administrative offices are now located there, along with their electronic medical records technology (in compliance with new healthcare regulations).

The Boulders building has been under construction for one year and will continue to be developed for the next year. It is also the future home of the HCA Virginia Sports Medicine Clinic, scheduled to open in 2012. With the addition of this clinic, the building will offer even more services within the facility – including wellness, performance training and sports medicine. The clinic will offer an unparalleled sports assessment facility that includes an indoor pool (with underwater treadmill and video capabilities), basketball court, tennis backboard, pitching mound, sprint track, sand rehab area and a synthetic turf area.

“We are very pleased to be able to be a part of a facility that offers so much to our patients in terms of design, services, specialization and supporting orthopedic technologies,” said Dr. Shaia.

About OrthoVirginia

OrthoVirginia is an independent group of highly trained and hospital/insurance company-credentialed orthopedic physician specialists and qualified staff who serve patients with any type of orthopedic problem at 11 office locations throughout Virginia. The practice employs more than 350 clinical, technical, paraprofessional, support and administrative personnel in Virginia.

Of its 11 sites, six are considered primary clinics, which are in close proximity to the Richmond acute-care hospitals in which OrthoVirginia physicians operate, including the new OrthoVirginia office at the Boulders near Chippenham Hospital; Hanover; Henrico; Johnston-Willis; St. Francis; and St. Mary’s.

Additional sites include satellite offices on Laburnum Avenue in Richmond and in New Kent and Emporia, as well as fully staffed clinics in Farmville and Kilmarnock. Each of OrthoVirginia’s six primary Richmond sites offers therapy services, and St. Mary’s and the Boulders sites are home to the practice’s acute pain management facilities. The St. Mary’s location also offers a surgery facility. The new Chippenham location will offer a surgery facility in 2012.

Ortho After Hours

OrthoVirginia also offers Ortho After Hours, with after-hours treatment on a walk-in basis at its St. Francis and St. Mary’s sites. These Ortho After Hours clinics provide a cost-effective alternative to emergency room visits for individuals with muscle and bone injuries and other non-life-threatening orthopedic conditions requiring immediate care. The continuing success of these office-based evening and Saturday services points to the need for new locations. Two new Ortho After Hours clinics are planned to open later this year – one in Hanover and one in Chippenham.

OrthoVirginia Physicians

OrthoVirginia currently offers 40 physician specialists in multiple subspecialties, bringing a depth of knowledge and breadth of experience to the practice. OrthoVirginia’s orthopedic specialists are dedicated to the communities they serve – and as such frequently serve as the on-call orthopedic specialists, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at most community hospitals in Richmond, including in Hanover, the West End and Southside. In addition, OrthoVirginia physician specialists are dedicated to community outreach by serving on medical staff committees and as officers of the organized medical staff at area hospitals.

History of West End Orthopaedic Clinic

West End Orthopaedic Clinic originated in the early 1900s with the practice of Drs. H. Page Mauck, R.D. Butterworth and William E. Daner at the location of 5th and Franklin Streets in downtown Richmond. The modern practice has its beginnings with Dr. John F. Butterworth III, who joined in 1957. At that time, the practice moved to the 900 N. Hamilton Street location, considered at the time to be the far West End of Richmond.
